Julian Piscitello

I am a designer based in Rome, working across web design, branding and editorial. I was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2002, and have lived in Italy since 2003.
My education started with an EsaBac diploma at a Liceo Linguistico. I graduated in Graphic Design from the Rome University of Fine Arts in 2025 with 110 cum laude, after six months in València on an Erasmus+ scholarship.
For the past two years I have worked in UI and product design, which is where I specialise. The through line with everything else is structure: a design system, a visual identity and an editorial grid are all attempts to make a set of decisions hold together beyond the first application.
I work best at the edges of a format. Every medium has a grey area where its rules stop being obvious, and the constraint usually becomes the most interesting part of the brief.

OVERVIEW

Inverso is the native intranet platform of an Italian real estate asset management firm, built to replace the third-party system its 150 employees had relied on for years. It went into production in early 2025 and remains in continuous development.

I joined as the only designer on the project and have been responsible for the entire design layer: information architecture, design system, and the interface of twelve sections. The work meant turning a set of unrelated internal processes into a single coherent environment, and keeping it coherent as the platform grew.

The entry point is a dashboard of resizable widgets, each available in four sizes that carry different levels of interaction, from a simple notification signal to a full master-detail interface. Users decide how much interface each tool deserves.

The system now counts more than forty components, designed in close dialogue with the frontend and backend teams so that every pattern could be built as drawn. Over the past months I extended that work into implementation, aligning Figma with Storybook and contributing directly to the codebase to close the distance between design intent and shipped product.

OVERVIEW

auuux is a music sharing platform that started as my thesis project, “Pass me the aux: music as a language in social communication”, and is now in development as a product.

The thesis was published as one object in two halves, in a sleeve the size of a standard vinyl record. Side A is a record pressed with ten tracks. Side B is the written volume.

The research follows how music has been listened to and passed around over the past century, from a private ritual to something performed in public through social platforms. What people share is rarely a recommendation. It works as a declaration of who they are, while the tools available for it were built for something else. A questionnaire answered by 150 people confirmed the pattern.

The app is built on that idea. At its centre is a profile made of music: a small selection of tracks a person chooses to stand in for them, held as a record rather than a list. Sharing runs through it, sending tracks, albums, artists or playlists inside the platform and out to other networks, with a rating system drawn as Lissajous curves so a score carries a visual signature instead of a number. A feed of recent listening keeps the social side alive, under full control over what stays visible, and a shared playlist gathers what friends have been recommending.

I developed the brand from positioning to visual identity, then the feature set, user flows, wireframes, design system and prototype.

OVERVIEW

Random Access Memory is a photographic book about Alzheimer's, where the binding carries the argument.

Five signatures are bound together, each printed on semi-transparent paper in a progressively darker tone, from white through to black. The five stages stand for the stages of memory loss. As the tone deepens the photographs become harder to read, and the spaces they show close in: the book opens outdoors and ends in a bedroom, moving inward through smaller and more enclosed environments until only the most private one is left.

Reading it reproduces what it describes. The semi-transparent stock lets each page interfere with the ones behind it, so images bleed into each other and nothing stays fully separate.

OVERVIEW

Junta is a kit of rolling papers and filters designed around waste reduction, where the packaging is treated as part of the product rather than something to throw away once opened.

Most of the pack detaches and works as filter tips, so the material that would normally be discarded is the material the product needs. That constraint decided everything else: the paper is recycled and biodegradable, and the whole thing is printed in non-toxic ink, since the printed surface ends up in the user's hands and mouth.

Alongside the kit, the project includes a retail display holding a full set of packs, extending the identity from the object in hand to the point of sale.

I developed the brand identity and the packaging, which was prototyped and produced as physical objects. Developed during an Erasmus exchange in València.

OVERVIEW

Beyond Human Control is the final output of a wider project on the Anthropocene, the era in which human activity has left a mark on every part of the planet. Within it, the project asks what artificial intelligence might do to the future of the species, and refuses to answer.

The investigation takes the form of two newspapers published as a single pack, The Utopian and The Dystopian. Every article and every image in one has a counterpart in the other: the same subject read twice, once from a hopeful position and once from a defeatist one. One pack holds a future where the technology extends what people can do, and a future where it takes that away. Neither is presented as the likely one, and holding the two side by side is the argument. Both were printed on real newsprint, at the scale and the material of a paper anyone might pick up.

Each newspaper carries an insert built on Persian carpet patterns, their geometry filled with AI-generated imagery: a structure worked out by hand over centuries, holding images that no hand made.

All the text and imagery was generated with AI in early 2023. Building the entire thing that way was a deliberate exercise rather than a celebration: the subject makes the artefact, and the question it raises about who authors what has only grown since.
